Routinely - Global Activity Patterns as seen through Nokia FriendView
COLLABORATORS - INDIVIDUAL SIDE-PROJECT

Nokia FriendView is an experimental social location and micro-blogging service released through Nokia Beta Labs. The service allows users to share their location and/or status message to their friends. Over a period of several months, the service had amassed a sizable volume of data which was made available for research. Since status messages are tied to a location, one observation that stood out was that people tended to post messages about their current activity. I became interested in recognizing and aggregating these activities over location and time. From this exercise, it would be possible to discern activities that are trending in a particular region, as well as get a snapshot of global activity at any point in time. The project was highlighted in Nokia Communications blog, and shared by Nokia on YouTube. Watch the video below in HD for best results.

Note: The project was executed in a short timeframe, and lacks enough polish. My primary project at NRC Palo Alto was centered around analysis/visualization of user behavior on map applications to guide future designs of the application. Unfortunately, results from this project cannot be shared.
